Being green became a buzz phrase and it should be. It’s time, health and money saving in the long run. It saves energy and reduces carbon footprint thus ensuring us that our planet will be a safe place for our grandchildren.
All of the following tips reduce your utility bills up to half.So keep on reading and stay green!
1. ENERGY ECONOMY
Buy a programmable thermostat to control the ideal temperature when you are on the go.
Believe me, your body will adjust more quickly to the smart temperature settings than your mind. Keep the temperature a few degrees lower in cold weather and a few degrees higher during the hot seasons. To maintain the ideal temperature set your thermostat at 78 degrees (Fahrenheit) in summer and 68 degrees in winter. If feeling uncomfortable raise/lower the temperature gradually by one degree per day.
Replace the incandescent bulbs with the compact fluorescent counterparts. The last use up to 80% less energy and endure up to 25 times longer. The higher initial price will pay off in three months.
Unplug electrical gadgets when not in use since many of them keep drawing power.
Set your washing machine at 30 degrees whenever possible for it uses around 85% less energy. Mind now, not all of your clothes need an extra cleaning boost and disinfecting.
2. WATER ECONOMY
First of all, install a water meter. It will give you regular updates on how much water you actually use. Instead of cutting down your shower time convert to a low- flow showerhead. Thus you will save 2,5 gallons of water per minute.
Also, convert to a low-flush toilet, high-efficiency washers, drying rack (instead of a drier).
Double-check your plumbing for leaks and fix it thus saving 3,000 gallons of water per year.
Install a rainwater collection system to water your garden. Place a faucet aerator on each faucet. These low-cost utensils preserve heat and water while maintaining water pressure high.
3. FRESH AIR ECONOMY
Start using non-toxic cleaning products either by buying ones labeled as eco-friendly or by making them yourself. You have thousands of recipes available on the internet but main ingredients are just the same: white vinegar, baking soda, lemon, soap, and water. Since you are not making a wedding cake it will take you less than 5 minutes.
4. INSULATION ECONOMY
Unless your home already has energy- efficient design you can cut your power bills by providing more insulation and it will pay for itself within 2 years. To stay green use Eco-friendly, renewable insulation made from recycled materials.
5. RECYCLING ECONOMY
E-waste is one of the biggest environmental enemies. It releases toxic chemicals which no insulation will keep from creeping into your home. So, donate or recycle your electronics don’t throw them away.
6. GAS ECONOMY
Please give a wide berth to gas ovens, burners, barbecues or grills inside your home.
Install carbon monoxide detectors so as to be aware of the number of toxic substances you are inhaling.
Staying green and eco- friendly is easier than we think. We just need to give it a try and help our planet not to cry:)
